(Megan's Journal has not yet caught up! From here on out, there will be quick notes from her dad, until she has time to revisit and update with more words and pictures. This page has some pictures Megan took from the second 2-day safari we took, this time at the Likumbe lodge inside Kruger Park)
Twin Black Rhinos. We were very lucky to see multiple Black and White Rhinos at the two different safari sites we visited
Lone Black Rhino. They had us take a picture of the cut in his ear as this is how they identify individuals.
Family greeting
Taking another sip
Same Black Rhino as above, this time with a good view of the Oxpecker on his head.
We got stuck in a traffic jam in Kruger Park
Locals didn't seem to be in any hurry
Traffic didn't take *this* long
Lots of strange rocks in and around the rivers
Safari life was quite easy for Megan. It turns out that safaris have a lot of down time (animals are generally only viewed when they are most active: early morning & late afternoon), so here are some pictures of Megan making the most of it:
Some interesting birds that they might not have in Iowa:
Below is a series from a 4-5 day old Black Rhino carcass. While poaching is rampant in Kruger Park, this one died of natural causes, and the rangers were able to get to it and remove its horns before any poachers could take them. Such horns are stored in an undisclosed, secure warehouse. At 4-5 days old, the rhino has been well picked over, but the windy conditions this morning meant poor hunting for these 3 lions so it was their best meal option. Similarly, a bad day of hunting meant that the vultures in the trees were willing to wait their turn!
