We were all given Chichewan names by the Phiri family on the second day of our stay. Megan was given the name "Mwayi", which means "Lucky".
More importantly, Megan was a superstar among the kids of both Chidedza as well as another village we stopped at for lunch.
While Audrey looked (and worked!) like most of the grown ups, Megan was clearly a kid from another part of the world -> they were all very curious to learn about this oddity. With the help of our trip's interpreter, Mary, Megan fielded questions for hours from huge crowds of village kids.
Questions ranged from where she's from, what her favorite subject at school was, and her favorite color to having her read from their English notebooks. They were even surprised to hear that Megan can speak Chinese, and asked for some examples.
We were so proud of how Megan handled the attention, and delighted that she would have such a unique experience. It even got her out of lots of manual labor. The downside was that she was often being mobbed by curious kids while others were having fun playing soccer across the same field, and a couple times she had to run card games well into the night for kids and grownups!
